NEREUS COST Action disseminated through “Water Reuse Europe”
Water Reuse Europe (WRE): a new voice for the water reuse industry
Water reuse plays an important role in the pursuit of sustainable water management. With a constantly increasing demand for water, a large number of European countries are investing in water reuse solutions. As a result, the number of industrial, agricultural, and municipal reuse schemes has grown significantly in recent years, reaching an estimated value of more than 200 schemes in operation. However, until now there has been no single voice to represent the sector’s interests, views, and aspirations.
WRE will create a collective identity for the European water reuse sector and promote an innovative and dynamic industry.
Objectives
- WRE stimulates the growth and competitiveness of the European water reuse sector by:
- Raising public awareness and understanding of water reuse practices;
- Facilitating the sharing of knowledge, good practices, techniques, research and experiences on water reuse amongst public and private entities involved in water reuse;
- Promoting European products, services and expertise in water reuse to communities around the world;
- Supporting European companies, and particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, in their efforts to commercialise safe and innovative water reuse solutions;
- Promoting research and innovation on water reuse.
Services
Through its online portal www.water-reuse.eu and its outreach activities, Water Reuse Europe offers a range of services for its members who are involved in the design, operation and maintenance of water reuse schemes as well as the regulation and governance of reuse schemes.
- Being a member of Water Reuse Europe provides organisations with:
- Access to news and information on the latest developments in the European and global reuse markets;
- Increased visibility of their services and products;
- A channel to communicate with stakeholders and potential collaborators.
- Information on specialist conferences, seminars, and workshops organised and/or promoted by the association.
Products
Other advantages of being a member of WRE include access to a range of products including a members directory, an abtracts library with more than 3,000 entries, up to date news from the European and global water reuse sectors, technical reports and a database of water reuse schemes.
Joining the WRE community
Whether from the private or public sector, large or small, client or provider, companies can join this exciting initiative by visiting the association’s website at: www.water-reuse.eu/joinwre .
The Objectives and the Activities of the NEREUS COST Action are disseminated through WRE on http://www.water-reuse.eu/research

Wastewater analysis and drugs — a European multi-city study
The findings of the largest European project to date in the emerging science of wastewater analysis are taken up in this ‘Perspective on drugs’. The project in question analysed wastewater in over 60 European cities and towns (hereinafter referred to as ‘cities’) to explore the drug-taking habits of those who live in them. The results provide a valuable snapshot of the drug flow through the cities involved, revealing marked geographical variations. More specifically, the project revealed a picture of distinct geographical and temporal patterns of drug use across European cities. Nireas-IWRC, has also successfully contributed to this effort as the representative of Cyprus in this European program.

The Nereus Training School will be dedicated to our colleague Dr. Cristina Beccera-Castro
The forthcoming Training School of NEREUS that will take place in Barcelona on the 13-15 of June 2016 will be dedicated to Cristina in order to honour her memory as a young and passionate researcher. Hence the event will be named:
Cristina Becerra-Castro Training School on “Methods for detecting and quantifying antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in the environment”.
Cristina was a post-doctoral fellow working in Porto, in the Faculty of Engineering at the Catholic University. It's been difficult to put pen-to-paper about her wonderful personality. She was the kind of person who all of us would like to have in a team. Besides being responsible, honest and always available to aid colleagues, her joviality and sense of humour, typical of someone that looks always to the brighter side of life, were part of the cement that any team needs.

Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment: Ecological Fate and Effects, Resistance Development and Implications for Human Health
Chairs: Kristian Brandt, Jason Snape, Joakim Larsson, Edward Topp
This session will focus on the fate and ecotoxicological effects of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance (AR) development and transfer in the environment and implications for human health. Specifically, we use the term antibiotic to include pharmaceutical agents with antibacterial properties. The scope of the session also extends to other chemical agents that can co-select for antibiotic resistance (e.g. metals and biocides).
Topics will be grouped in the following four areas:
- The ecological effects of human and veterinary antibiotics including impacts on natural microbial community structure and function, aquatic food chains and other organisms.
- The role of antibiotic residues in the environment on the selection and persistence of antibiotic resistant microorganisms and/or AR genes.
- The dissemination and routes of transmission of AR to humans and implications for human health risk assessment.
- The fate of antibiotics and AR in wastewater treatment and the environment; including removal and risk management strategies.
We would anticipate abstracts that address aspects related to the following questions:
- Do human and veterinary antibiotics at environmentally relevant concentrations cause effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms or affect ecosystem services provided by microbial communities?
- Are particular environments and/or mixtures of antibiotics, metals, and pollutants of special concern?
- Do bacteria secrete antibiotics in situ and, if so, what are the ecological roles of such compounds and how may these roles be disturbed by subinhibitory levels of antibiotic pollutants?
- Do human and veterinary antibiotics at environmentally relevant concentrations select for resistant microorganisms or mobile genetic elements carrying AR.
- What are the pathways of transfer of antibiotic resistant microorganisms and/or AR genes to the human population? What are the environmental conditions that promote the transfer of AR? Are there threshold concentrations of antibiotic agents that promote AR transfer?
- To what extent does the rate of resistance selection, gene acquisition and dissemination of resistant microorganisms increase with increased exposure to antibiotics (e.g., AR bacteria selected for in treated pigs). Do antibiotic residues in manure storage facilities help maintain antibiotic resistant populations)?
- What is the frequency and rate of transfer of AR genes between environmental and pathogenic bacteria and can an appropriate risk assessment framework be developed?
- Does waste water treatment enrich for AR and what wastewater treatment strategies and other management options could be used to reduce the resistance load in the environment?
- When new antimicrobial drugs are brought to market should an environmental assessment be conducted to identify the pre‐existing resistance reservoir?
- Should pharmacovigilance studies to assess the proliferation of resistance in clinically important pathogens be extended to include environmental compartments?
Preliminary session type: Platform and Poster
